First Grade Homeschool Curriculum 2018-2019

This year we are keeping things pretty simple in our homeschool. I want to focus on core subjects with lots of read alouds, games, and hands on activities.

Our state requires us to cover most of the following subjects. Check your state requirements to make sure you are including the necessary subjects. Here are the basic class we will cover

Language Arts

Social Studies

So here we go!

If you would like  to see the our First Grade Homeschool Curriculum selections  you can watch the video below.

Quiet Hour Activities : I like to start our mornings out slowly and easy into the heavy, time consuming subjects. We have a quiet hour first thing in the morning. At this time the kids will do independent activities like reading, handwriting, games, or learning activities that don’t require mom’s help.

  • Educational Games
  • Activity Books
  • Let’s Play School Curriculum – Chelsea has the best ideas and we love EVERYTHING she makes!
  • Especially Education Task Boxes  –My new obsession is this idea of task boxes and Especially Education is my fav dealer! So many great ideas and activities that my boys already love doing every morning. She includes Math, Handwriting, Social Studies, Science, and more. Once we review all the boxes the boys will be able to complete them on their own with little to no help from me. It’s also something that their big sister can help them with on days that I’m working with another child or need to catch up on some housework. These are a lot of work to put together but are so worth it!
  • Free Handwriting Worksheets

Phonics, Math, Science, Social Studies:

We will continue to use Reading Eggs for these subjects. My boys really enjoy the fun online experience and are learning how to read while having fun. The Reading Eggs program also has a Math program called Mathseeds that we purchased as well. They offer tons of online books, science projects and social studies lessons as well. Below are a few snippets from the website that I pulled to give you a better idea of whats included. Recently a homeschool section was added with lesson plans and tons of printable worksheets. I printed out all the worksheets for Reading Eggs and Mathseeds for out first term and took them to Staples to bind them and add a front and back cover.

Reading Eggs – (from the website)

Reading Eggs instructs homeschoolers in the five core literacy areas outlined by the National Reading Panel as essential components of reading instruction. These include:

  • Phonemic awareness – children learn the necessary listening skills to become aware that speech is made up of sounds and that these sounds make words, syllables and phonemes.
  • Phonics – each letter of the alphabet is introduced in its own lesson with a focus on reinforcing letter-sound relationships and highlighting the alphabetic principle.
  • Fluency – children develop the rapid word recognition skills essential for reading fluency, including learning to instantly recall crucial sight words that make up 50% of elementary level books.
  • Vocabulary – new words are introduced with visual support to provide context and increase word knowledge and retention.
  • Comprehension – reading for meaning is the end goal of Reading Eggs. The program includes over 2500 e-books, each with their own comprehension quiz.

Mathseeds (from the website)

  • Mathseeds is a comprehensive online mathematics program for children aged 3-9. It offers a huge range of carefully structured lessons and activities that build mathematical skills over a broad range of number, shape and measurement topics. The Mathseeds program is packed full of enjoyable child-focused activities that makes learning a rewarding and meaningful experience. It teaches fundamental concepts in a fun, motivating and engaging way, whilst rewarding children for their efforts.

Art and Music: We will be working through The Confessions of a Homeschoolers World’s Greatest Composers and World’s Greatest Artist Unit Studies.

  • We might be adding the unit study Road Trip USA from Confessions of a Homeschooler to our curriculum this year. I started this with my daughter a few years ago and we never finished.

There you have it! I can’t wait to give you a mid year update on how we are enjoying all our new curriculum.
